āµ character information name: Jayce Talis canon: Arcane age: Early 30s canon point: End of Season 1 history:link
abilities: Jayce has no superhero-like abilities, but of his strengths and skills: āØ1. Genius. His research and inventions in canon are considered revolutionary and a near impossible feat. As one of the two inventors of Hextech, he found a way to harness magical energy into equipment, tools, and weapons, when magic had previously been exclusively used by those naturally gifted with magic, like mages/sorcerers, etc.
2. Blacksmithing. Heās a skilled blacksmith and perfectionist when it comes to his creations. Everything he makes is extremely durable, and thatās not including when itās infused with the magic of the gemstones, as a result of his proficiency around a forge.
3. Fighting. While he is physically well-built from his forge work, heās a scientist first and foremost, so he really shouldnāt be as good at fighting as he is. He has no formal training in it, but despite that he somehow does fairly decently in a fight, with and without his Mercury Hammer. He also has great intuition with when to dodge and duck, and where to hit someone with precision. In example, (Spoilers for season 1) here at 1:15, and (Spoilers for episode 1 of season 2) here at 0:18 and 1:34)
What Jayce wants more than anything is to be able to work on his craft and inventions, Hextech, with his partner Viktor. But because of how sought-after this development is, over the course of season one, he became less able to work on his inventions as much as he had to defend it from being commandeered by others for malicious use. At this time, itās Viktorās influence guiding him- make sure Hextech is used for good, make sure Hextech isnāt turned into a weapon. As a result, Jayce says he would prefer to shut down all Hextech related operations until it could be guaranteed that there wouldnāt be anyone hurt by it.
Unfortunately, the Piltover elites would sooner take Hextech away from him by legally mandated means before theyād let their profits fall, and so in order to ensure the Council didnāt make decisions about Hextech without his say, he was invited (and heavily convinced) to join the Council by Mel Medarda. Now following Melās influence, he soon became leader of the Council, separating him even further from his true desire to just be a scientist. The pressures of needing to make life changing decisions for an entire city burdened him greatly, heās not cut out to be manipulative or to thrive in a political environment, when his instinct is to assume everyone has the best intentions. Mel showed him how to maneuver his way through diplomacy and negotiation, which he picked up on as a quick study, but it continued to isolated him from where and what he wanted to do, just to satisfy what most others were asking of him.
When he reaches his breaking point on decision making, it usually results in reckless actions based on his own sense of justice, making ill-thought out choices that sometimes wind up having worse repercussions than he expected. But itās in times like that that his dedication to his altruism is what motivates him, putting aside what Piltoverās elites want to see and hear from him to make sure he does what he thinks is right. Unfortunately it just takes a lot to get him to that point- heās quicker to try and go with someone elseās solution than his own, speaking to his own persistent lack of faith in himself.
While season one focuses on Jayceās struggles with politics and balancing his own desires versus everyone elseās, thereās a few brief moments we get to see what Jayce is like outside of these stresses, in the nuances of how he acts and what he does. Heās overall a polite and funny person, quick to admit when heās wrong and apologize, and going out of his way when being praised for his inventions to sneak up on Caitlyn (whom he views like a younger sister) to flick her on the back of the head while sheās distracted. Heās quick on his feet, making up an entirely new speech in front of hundreds of people (solely because he didnāt want to disappoint his old teacher), and had enough charisma that he still was given thunderous applause at the end of it.
