āµ character information name: Jayce Talis canon: Arcane age: Early 30s canon point: End of Season 1 history:link
abilities: Jayce has no superhero-like abilities, but of his strengths and skills: āØ1. Genius. His research and inventions in canon are considered revolutionary and a near impossible feat. As one of the two inventors of Hextech, he found a way to harness magical energy into equipment, tools, and weapons, when magic had previously been exclusively used by those naturally gifted with magic, like mages/sorcerers, etc.
2. Blacksmithing. Heās a skilled blacksmith and perfectionist when it comes to his creations. Everything he makes is extremely durable, and thatās not including when itās infused with the magic of the gemstones, as a result of his proficiency around a forge.
3. Fighting. While he is physically well-built from his forge work, heās a scientist first and foremost, so he really shouldnāt be as good at fighting as he is. He has no formal training in it, but despite that he somehow does fairly decently in a fight, with and without his Mercury Hammer. He also has great intuition with when to dodge and duck, and where to hit someone with precision. In example, (Spoilers for season 1) here at 1:15, and (Spoilers for episode 1 of season 2) here at 0:18 and 1:34)
What Jayce wants more than anything is to be able to work on his craft and inventions, Hextech, with his partner Viktor. But because of how sought-after this development is, over the course of season one, he became less able to work on his inventions as much as he had to defend it from being commandeered by others for malicious use. At this time, itās Viktorās influence guiding him- make sure Hextech is used for good, make sure Hextech isnāt turned into a weapon. As a result, Jayce says he would prefer to shut down all Hextech related operations until it could be guaranteed that there wouldnāt be anyone hurt by it.
Unfortunately, the Piltover elites would sooner take Hextech away from him by legally mandated means before theyād let their profits fall, and so in order to ensure the Council didnāt make decisions about Hextech without his say, he was invited (and heavily convinced) to join the Council by Mel Medarda. Now following Melās influence, he soon became leader of the Council, separating him even further from his true desire to just be a scientist. The pressures of needing to make life changing decisions for an entire city burdened him greatly, heās not cut out to be manipulative or to thrive in a political environment, when his instinct is to assume everyone has the best intentions. Mel showed him how to maneuver his way through diplomacy and negotiation, which he picked up on as a quick study, but it continued to isolated him from where and what he wanted to do, just to satisfy what most others were asking of him.
When he reaches his breaking point on decision making, it usually results in reckless actions based on his own sense of justice, making ill-thought out choices that sometimes wind up having worse repercussions than he expected. But itās in times like that that his dedication to his altruism is what motivates him, putting aside what Piltoverās elites want to see and hear from him to make sure he does what he thinks is right. Unfortunately it just takes a lot to get him to that point- heās quicker to try and go with someone elseās solution than his own, speaking to his own persistent lack of faith in himself.
While season one focuses on Jayceās struggles with politics and balancing his own desires versus everyone elseās, thereās a few brief moments we get to see what Jayce is like outside of these stresses, in the nuances of how he acts and what he does. Heās overall a polite and funny person, quick to admit when heās wrong and apologize, and going out of his way when being praised for his inventions to sneak up on Caitlyn (whom he views like a younger sister) to flick her on the back of the head while sheās distracted. Heās quick on his feet, making up an entirely new speech in front of hundreds of people (solely because he didnāt want to disappoint his old teacher), and had enough charisma that he still was given thunderous applause at the end of it.
NAME: Jayce Talis AGE: 32 CANON: Arcane CANON POINT: End of Season 2. CRAU: N/A OTHER: N/A
SUITABILITY: He is a fully adult man who has had sex before (on screen, even!! the only guy who does in the show!!). Heās a character motivated by love and passion, usually for his interests, but heās a dedicated lover through and through. Most guys arenāt giving their lady oral on the first date, probably. Given his canon point at the end of Season 2, heās even less restrained than he would if he was his Season 1 self, given the heaps of trauma he went through, heās less likely to be worried about what others think of him, and slightly more likely to give into what feels good.
HISTORY: (sorry itās like 500 words)
Jayceās story starts off with him getting knocked out and robbed by a group of literal children. Itās a rough start that escalates to his illegal research being confiscated, his arrest, which then leads to him essentially being put under his motherās conservatorship. Clearly not what he had hoped would happen when all he wanted to do was harness the power of magic into a controllable and usable form of science for the sake of helping others. Given that magic has been his lifelong obsession since he was around five years old, the idea of all his work being destroyed and his expulsion from school is the final straw for his mental stability, and he prepares to take his own life. Fortunately, Viktor steps in just in time to stop him, and helps him continue his work to great success, and thus Hextech was created.
Flashforward seven years, and Hextech has made the city of Piltover thrive. Itās become so important to their position in the global economy that even when one of the crystals that is the source of Hextechās power is stolen by someone from the undercity, Zaun, the Council doesnāt shut down Hextech but rather escalates Jayce to a position of power on their Council so he can better manage the situation. Unfortunately, this all makes everything worse, as tensions between the twin cities escalates to the point that an assassination attempt is made on the entirety of the Council.
Jayce survives along with 2 other councilors, but Viktor who was also present, doesnāt. This starts Jayce down yet another dark path, where he uses the very device Viktor had insisted he destroy, to revive Viktorās dead body. This changes Viktor permanently, and upon his reawakening, leaves Jayce in Piltover for his own journey in Zaun. Jayce doesnāt take this well, and although intending to go find Viktor again, is instead sidetracked by a magically-sourced anomaly at the heart of the Hexgates. Because heās very smart, he decides to hit it with a giant hammer, and this sends him into a post-apocalyptic future where everyoneās been turned into statue-like creatures. After months of suffering alone in a cave due to injuries, he finally crawls his way out, and is given a mission to return to the past so he can prevent this future.
With this goal in mind, he returns to the āpresent,ā and proceeds to kill Viktor (does this make sense? maybe), which sends Viktor down his own spiral of transforming into an otherworldly being disconnected from his humanity entirely. Since thatās the exact opposite of what he wanted to happen despite his own series of bad decisions leading there, Jayce tries to reconnect with Viktorās humanity in the astral plane, finally able to speak to Viktor on an emotional level that Viktor Was The Magic He Loved Along The Way (essentially), and they work together to stop the apocalypse that Viktor had begun by blowing up in the astral plane.
ABILITIES: N/A, he is just a normal guy. His genius-level intelligence isnāt to a supernatural degree, although he has an extremely good recollection. LMK if I should write this up like actual abilities though.
VICES:
Obsessive/selfish - The most obvious of his flaws is how he doesnāt really let things go. Be it an interest, or a person, or a jobā heās going to let it take over his life because he wants to āsucceedā at it. Letting people use magic? He makes his whole life about discovering how to read an esoteric language thatās specifically gatekept from non-mages, travels to the desert before he even finishes colleges to do discover a hidden type of resource that was reported about in a minor article in a newspaper once, and then frames all of his time around trying to discover its secrets, almost flunking out of school because he has been falling asleep in class and failing to pay attention during anything that wasnāt related to that interest. Fortunately it pays off, because in a timeline where it doesnāt, he takes his own life. The man (Viktor) who saves him from that fate? He immediately calls him partner at any chance he gets, he works along side him every day for seven years, and when Viktorās disease progresses to the point it seems to be of no return, he helps him work on dangerous experimental magic despite his former professor and fellow councilmanās warnings, even going to the point he has Heimerdinger fired from the council he made when helping establish the city itself, just because he didnāt want him getting in the way of Viktorās cure.
Gullible/Naive/Childish - In contrast to Jayceās intelligence, heās far from the cold and logical type. His curiosity and wonder about the world is what drives his interest, and if something is too boring, he doesnāt bother with it. With this childish aspect of him, if he finds something exciting, heāll have an innocent sort of glee about it, and at the same time if heās been hurt or offended, heāll pout or have a tiny tantrum. Along with that, he has a naive and gullible sort of attitudeā heāll first expect the best out of someone or a group of people, before he considers any negative repercussions. How else could someone make a giant magic-fueled powerglove, and think āah yes, this will only be used for mining giant rocks, and never used to crush someoneās skull in between those giant fingers!ā or āthe deadly laser Viktor made, thereās no way someone would use it to just shoot and kill, it would probably be used to make nice little drawings on the walls.ā Some of it is intentional delusion, a desire to impart his point of view on the worldā he wants to hope that if just properly inspired or cared for, people would naturally want to be kind to one another. This obviously leads to him being mislead and taken advantage of by multiple people, and often ones closest to him.
Dependent - The only times we see Jayce alone, heās miserable, and itās not just a matter of the circumstances that left him alone. He used to insist on working alone because the nature of his experiments were illegal and thus he couldnāt trust anyone with the secret of it, but itās also clear he doesnāt like to be left alone with his thoughts. He spirals in his own anxiety and concerns when he doesnāt have someone to talk to or bounce off of, heāll pace a hole into the floor if he doesnāt have something to put his mind to work on. All of this worsened once he met Viktor and became intertwined with him immediately, to the point he woudnāt want to live in a world without him.
VIRTUES:
Compassionate/caring - On the flipside of obsessive, the reason for it at the core is because he cares. He cares so much for people; his mother, Caitlyn, Mel, Viktor, and the people of Piltover. Like many in Piltover, he knows that Zaun/the Undercity is mistreated, but he didnāt know how badly until he went there himself, and saw first hand that children work in factories. His immediate following action was to make a deal with Silco to get those factories shut down, knowing that if political problems continued to escalate, more children would be caught in the crossfire. The ānext era of Hextechā was to help the people of Zaun not suffer so much under the burden of their work (however, this still ignores that Zaun would be doing the manual labor that Piltover wouldnāt). Big āhis heartās in the right placeā energy, even if heās not necessarily going about his solutions in the right way.
Optimistic/Hopeful - Which leads into this point, optimism. He truly believes that if the right steps are taken, peace between the two cities could be found. Itās that kind of optimism that borders on egotism, where the border between his faith in others and his faith in himself to find a way to fix a problem, becomes the same thing. On one hand, his faith means he sees the good before he sees the bad, but on the other hand, see: the vice āGullible/Naive/Childish.ā Being shallowly optimistic is a part of Piltovian cultureā everything is good, because it has to beā but Jayceās mindset differs in that he knows things arenāt perfect the way they areā everything can be good, because we can make it be. Itās his true dedication to hope that helps him in every step of his journey, itās only because of hope that he survives his time in the ravine.
SUIT REQUESTS:
1ST CHOICE: ⦠DIAMONDS ā¦
Jayce is an extremely tactile kind of guy. Heās always finding excuses to touch someone heās close to, be it an arm around them, fingers touching when passing objects, or if itās someone heās allowed to be intimate with, heās prone to putting his head in their lap. He finds relief in touching someone elseās body and feeling their warmth, probably because he has been (repeatedly) traumatized by the fear of being alone and isolated. However despite how much he likes to touch, heās not usually the first to initiate something beyond simple touch, half because he doesnāt want to impose (how gentleman-like) and half because he fears the rejection he could get if heās wrong. The suit focused on physicality would take what he already craves, and punish him for his failure to follow through with the next steps.
2ND CHOICE: ā„ HEARTS ā„
Motivated by his passion and love for others, his emotional state often dictates his courses of action. The way a Hearts suit would interact with how he already acts on a personal level would be to magnify the worse parts of himself, where he disregards logic entirely for the sake of satisfying his emotions. Heās so afraid of being alone that heās willing to ignore someoneās own autonomy in order to make sure he doesnāt personally have to experience a severe emotional loss, and thereās a version of himself that would be so dedicated to Viktor that he would give up his own free will to be by Viktorās side. Itās only when he sees that his own selfishness leads to literally a world-ending apocalypse does he finally put his own desires aside and accept the loss (and even then, does he really, if he chooses to die in the arms of the person heās obsessed with?). Definitely not the mindset of someone who deals normally with their emotions even without the prompting of a suit.
